OK, so in Kaz, there is no A/C, no fans, and in our apartment, no screens on the windows (there were screens in Almaty). The only part of the window that opens is a tiny little rectangle, about the size of a toaster oven. At first we had no screens, and we took the chance on opening them as it was so blasted hot when we first arrived. Then we discovered the flies are the size of B-52's, and mosquitos are tiny but devious. So, luckily we listened to some advice from the WPA Loop, and brought some window screen and duct tape. And, Brent's handy Leatherman Tool (thanks Mike!!!). Brent was able to take the screen remnants that Jake put his paw through and make 3 screens for the apt... although Nastia warned us they may get stolen. Of course, since then there was a big thunderstorm, and the weather is quite a bit cooler.
Too, there is NO peanut butter in Karaganda, which is what Brent depends on for breakfast. Luckily one of the other Americans here has some connections, and we scored a jar... not cheap, but heaven-sent.
